Changing Your Cheeks

One of the more unfortunate aspects of aging is the loss of volume that occurs in our cheeks. As our production of collagen declines every year with natural aging, our cheeks flatten and sink. That means one of the tenets of beauty — high cheekbones — is now gone.

We use dermal fillers, such as Juvéderm Voluma, to return volume to the cheeks, but the results only last about one year. For more permanence, at Austin Cosmetic Surgery we place cheek implants in cheek augmentation surgery.

What is cheek augmentation?

Cheek augmentation is a surgical procedure where soft silicone implants are placed permanently to give the patient more prominent cheekbones. Sometimes, we use cheek augmentation to expand facial rejuvenation by adding it to rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery, or a brow lift.

Are cheek implants a single shape?

There are countless shapes available in today’s silicone implants used for these surgeries with the Drs. Carlotti. We use them to change, alter, or enhance the midface or to simply return lost volume.

Unlike some surgeons, at Austin Cosmetic Surgery, we believe cheek implants need to be anchored in place. This alleviates any possibility of movement later. To anchor these, we place two small titanium retention screws in most cases.

How is cheek augmentation done?

Both Dr. Michelle Carlotti and Dr. Albert Carlotti have extensive maxillofacial expertise and experience with facial surgeries. During your consultation, they will explain to you how the surgery will go. Here are the basics.

This surgery is performed with the patient under general anesthesia. Incisions are made inside the upper lip to gain access to the cheekbones. The intraoral incision not only minimizes visible scarring, but it also gives the Drs. Carlotti a clear view of the patient’s bone structure for optimal placement and symmetry. The implants are placed and then secured to the cheekbones with the screws mentioned above. The incisions are then closed, and the procedure is complete.
