What Are Stretch Marks?

Stretch marks are a common dermatological condition consisting of atrophic dermal scars with overlying epidermal atrophy.

They can be found in all ethnic groups and are usually located on the buttocks, thighs, knees, breasts, calves, and lumbosacral areas. The exact cause is unclear but it is thought to be a combination of hormonal changes, genetics, weight/muscle mass fluctuations, heavy or long term oral or topical corticosteroids, and adrenal gland disorders with increased adrenal cortical activity. During pregnancy stretch marks usually occur between the 6th and 7th month.

How Does Resurfx Treat Stretch Marks?

Resurfx is a non-ablative fractional 1565nm laser that uses a “dual impact” technique for targeting stretch marks. We use two separate settings to target the deepest layers of scars and the superficial layers surrounding them. This is to improve the texture, tone, and color of scars by elevating the atrophic bases and simultaneously smoothing their ridges.

What Stretch Marks Can Be Treated with Resurfx?

Resurfx can be used on almost all areas of the body and safe on most skin types. A proper consultation is needed by your provider to determine if this treatment is best for you.

Who Is a Candidate for Resurfx Stretch Mark Treatment?

Best outcomes can be expected with candidates that have stretch marks no larger than 1cm and without excessive underlying skin laxity. For red stretch marks that have no depression, we consider IPL to be our first line of treatment. A full consultation is needed to see determine who is the best candidate or Resurfx stretch mark treatment.

How Long Are Treatments and How Many Treatments Are Needed to Eliminate Stretch Marks?

Treatment times depend on the size and number of areas being treated. For optimal results with atrophic stretch marks, it can take a series of 3-6 sessions scheduled 4-6 weeks apart. Some areas of the body respond faster than others and patients see results even after the first treatment.

Is Resurfx Treatment Painful, What Is Post-Care?

Topical numbing is used to minimize any discomfort along with laughing gas if needed. Expect some intense erythema in the first 6 hours followed by a gradual decline up to 5 days. Edema is mild and usually resolves in as little as 24 hours. It is recommended to use cold compresses immediately after treatment along with short term topical steroids to control inflammation and reduce the risk of post inflammatory hyperpigmentation in dark skin types. Regular application of moisturizers is advised to prevent itching during the healing process. Sunblock of SPF 30-50 should be used over areas immediately following procedure and extensive sun exposure should be limited for the next 5-7 days.
