Chin augmentation involves the use of implants to increase the projection, shape, and proportions of your chin. It’s a great procedure for patients with weak or asymmetrical chin or anyone who desires a stronger profile.
What’s involved in chin augmentation?
Dr. Carlotti, Michelle or Albert, performs chin augmentation in our medical center with the patient under general anesthesia. The procedure usually takes around two hours.
Prior to surgery we use computer imaging and digital photography to map out your bone structure. Together, we then select the implant or implants that will give you the stronger chin you’re seeking.
For surgery, we use a newer technique that leaves no visible scarring. Rather than making an incision under the chin, Dr. Carlotti uses an intra-oral incision (inside the mouth) so there isn’t any scarring. Beyond implants, Dr. Carlotti can also perform what is known as genioplasty, a repositioning of the chin bones to achieve the desired projection for patients with receding chins.
Chin augmentation can also be accomplished with dermal fillers such as Restylane. Their effects are temporary, however. Dermal fillers are a good way for a patient to “demo” a new chin without committing to implants.
Recovery and results of chin augmentation
Obviously, your results are immediate. Patients typically feel slight numbness in the chin and the lips, as well as swelling and bruising in the area after the procedure. This generally passes in a few days. Most patients can return to work and day-to-day activities in a week or so.
