About Hair Loss
Did you know that the human scalp has approximately 100,000 terminal hair follicles? Each of the hairs that these follicles go through a cycle of growth, resting, shedding, and regrowth, and each hair is at a different point in that cycle at any given time. Hair loss occurs when this cycle is shifted, and hair stops growing and falls out prematurely. This can be the result of hormones, autoimmune reactions, malnutrition, drugs, or localized or general stress. (1)
If you have hair, you can lose it. And although hair loss is common and even expected in men, hair loss occurs in women at very similar rates. This can be a heartbreaking reality for women. However, if you’re a woman experiencing hair loss, you are not alone. In fact, there are a reported 30 million women who experience baldness, and 55% of women will experience some degree of hair loss during their lifetime.
There are many factors that can cause hair loss. Dr. Cabret and her teams work diligently to determine what could principally be causing your hair thinning or loss. It is important that you and your doctor have a thorough, honest discussion about your lifestyle in order to understand what is causing this condition. and which course of treatment would best remedy your hair loss. One of the leading causes of hair loss is called androgenetic alopecia also known as male pattern balding. This genetic condition, despite the lay term name, is the most common cause of hair loss in both men and women. However, hair loss can also be a symptom of other diseases or lifestyle choices.
Hair loss known as telogen effluvium is stress-induced hair loss that occurs when a significant amount of cortisol forces hair follicles into the resting phase, and they stop growing. This can lead to sudden hair loss. This also can be caused during a time a woman is pregnant or after they’ve given birth due to fluctuations in hormones. Some medications like antidepressants and ADHD medications have been known to cause hair loss over extended periods of time. It’s important to consult with your doctor before discontinuing any medication.
PRP for Hair Restoration
Platelet-Rich Plasma is a regenerative therapy with effects that have been widely studied and documented. It’s used in several different areas of medicine, and recently has become popular in anti-aging medicine for its rejuvenating abilities.
Platelet-Rich Plasma is derived from a sample of the patient’s own blood, which is then spun in a centrifuge to isolate the PRP that contains valuable reparative, stem cells.
This powerful substance contains an abundance of growth factors and cytokines that stimulate the formation of new blood vessels, stem cell migration, and cell proliferation, all of which work to enhance the body’s capacity to repair and regenerate. PRP has proven therapeutic effectiveness for androgenetic alopecia in multiple studies. Patients have seen significant improvements after treatment with PRP, including increased hair thickness, mitigating breakage, and increased overall hair quantity and regrowth. (3)
When PRP is injected into the scalp, dormant hair follicles are forced back into the growth phase of the hair lifecycle. Thinning areas can begin to regrow hair and fill back in.
Benefits of PRP for hair restoration include:
- No risk of allergic reaction because the PRP is derived from the patient’s own blood
- Minimally invasive, because only a series of injections on the scalp is required
- Naturally stimulates cellular growth
- Long-lasting results
Furthermore, PRP can be combined with other hair restoration treatments to improve their efficacy. (4)
Other Hair Growth Therapies
What can’t lasers do? We know that lasers can get rid of unwanted hair, but did you know that when applied at the right wavelength, they can effectively stimulate hair growth? Theradome uses low-frequency wavelengths to stimulate the hair follicles on a cellular level. This clever helmet emits energy visible as a gentle red light that is absorbed by the scalp. Theradome sessions take only 20 minutes and are a painless, drug-free way to stimulate hair regrowth.
This drug-free, medical-grade supplement contains Vitamin C, Calcium, Biotin, Apple Extract, and a proprietary amino-rich Marine Complex. This formula is based on 25 years of research, and clinical studies have proven its ability to reduce hair shedding and increase hair thickness. Viviscal tablets are an easy way to support healthy hair.
NeoGraft Follicular Unit Extraction
The NeoGraft system has completely transformed the way that hair transplants are performed and greatly has improved the results. Unlike previous methods of hair transplantation that involved large strips of skin being removed, NeoGraft allows individual hair follicles to be transplanted for more natural-looking results and minimal scarring. NeoGraft technology uses a technique called follicular unit extraction, (FUE) which allows for automated precision. Follicular units can be safely and discreetly removed from areas with sufficiently thick hair and then relocated into lacking areas.
Viable follicles are taken from a donor site, often from the back of the head, where hair growth is the densest. When NeoGraft collects viable follicles, it does so in anatomical units. Each unit may contain up to three living hair shafts, so the actual number of hairs transplanted can be up to three times the number of follicles harvested. After delicately collecting these living follicles, a technician will insert the individual follicles along the thinning or balding area. NeoGraft creates tiny channels that act as new homes for the transplanted hair follicles. Once they’ve adapted to their new location, they can begin producing natural, healthy hair. Both men and women experiencing hair loss can benefit from NeoGraft FUE, PRP Treatments, Theradome and Viviscal. These treatments use the latest advances to safely restore hair. Candidates for NeoGraft can use donor hair from other areas of their scalp or body to fill out thin areas along their hairline, eyebrows, or facial hair. (5) PRP can encourage hair growth in those looking to halt hair loss and restore their hairline.
Identifying the cause of your hair loss will determine whether these treatments are good solutions for your hair restoration.

After your PRP hair restoration session, you may experience sensitivity at your injection sites, but this will soon fade, and you’ll be able to continue your normal routine while the PRP gets to work under the surface of your skin. Recovery from NeoGraft requires more attention and usually has about a 1 week of downtime/home recovery, but you’ll be given detailed instructions on how to care for your newly transplanted hair. It is important not to wear hats or anything that would upset the treatment area during your recovery. There may be minimal bleeding, swelling, and redness, but this is completely normal. Sleeping in an elevated position can help promote healing. You can return to work in the next few days to one week depending on your comfort level and/or need for discreetness, but it is important to avoid strenuous activities and contact sports for the next two weeks. The use of Non-Shave NeoGraft can be discussed and is possible in some instances but is much more time-consuming, carries some additional risks, and consequently slightly more costly.
How Much Does Hair Restoration Cost in Austin?
The cost of your hair restoration procedure will depend on the treatment you’ve selected. If you’ve chosen PRP, your cost will be determined by the number of vials per session, the packaging of such, and the number of treatment sessions required to achieve results. If you’ve chosen to use NeoGraft to restore your hairline, the cost will depend on the number of follicles that can be transplanted and your ultimate goals. Dr. Cabret’s highly trained and knowledgeable staff will be able to give you an estimate for the cost of your hair restoration following your personal consultation.
