What is the UltraPulse CO2 Laser?

The UltraPulse is an aesthetic ablative CO2 laser. It is designed to resurface the skin and reverse the effects of the environment, time, and natural aging. At Austin Cosmetic Surgery, we chose the UltraPulse platform because it can penetrate deeper than any aesthetic CO2 laser. Plus, it has great versatility in how we can use it to keep our patients looking their best. We are proud to provide this best-in-class technology to our patients in and beyond Austin, TX, and Scottsdale, AZ.

“This facility and the staff here are wonderful. The people are always super friendly and professional. They take time to get to know you and will answer all of your questions. No one has ever said anything to me that could be perceived as judgmental. I have gone in multiple times with questions about skincare that were unrelated to my procedure and they have been very helpful.”

What can the UltraPulse CO2 Laser be used to treat?

At Austin Cosmetic Surgery, we’ve utilized the UltraPulse to address a number of issues, including problems with hyperpigmentation, acne scarring, wrinkles, and rough skin texture. The laser resurfacing process can significantly improve skin appearance and texture, and it can tighten the skin by stimulating collagen production.

These are conditions we address with the UltraPulse: age spots, sagging or puffy eyelids, birthmarks, wrinkles, skin laxity, sun damage, acne scar, and scar revision.

How does the UltraPulse CO2 Laser work?

The UltraPulse has different modes that we match to the skin problems we are looking to target.

  • DeepFX | ActiveFX Fractional Modes: These are fractional resurfacing modes, where hundreds of microscopic channels are made by the laser energy penetrating the epidermis down into the dermis. The channels are surrounded by untouched healthy skin, hence the “fractional” moniker.
  • PigmentFX: Low, sub-ablative wavelength for mild treatment of age spots and other areas of pigmentation problems.
  • ActiveFX and MaxFX: These are full and fractional treatment modalities to address skin texture and pigment inconsistencies.
  • Deepest Impact with SCARR FX Mode: This mode penetrates up to 4 mm in a single pulse. This is ideal for treating deep, thick scar tissue.
  • Shortest Pulse Duration: The UltraPulse CO2 Laser also has the shortest pulse duration, coupled with CoolScan™ technology to keep the surface skin cool and comfortable. Short pulses allow the UltraPulse to penetrate more deeply (the key to more collagen production) with the lowest energy. This reduces patient discomfort and potential thermal damage.

How does the UltraPulse SCARR FX mode improve scars?

Because UltraPulse can penetrate so deeply, this is effective when we’re treating issues such as keloid and hypertrophic scars. When working to revise a large scar that is visually unappealing and may be impacting movement, the UltraPulse delivers microscopic beams of CO2 laser energy down into the scar tissue. This ablates much of the existing tissue, and it rehabilitates the tissue to encourage the body to produce substantial amounts of new, healthier collagen in the skin. It’s impossible to fully remove any scar. Our goal is to replace the very obvious scar with a new scar that is virtually invisible. We’ve found the UltraPulse to be excellent for these treatments.

How is an UltraPulse CO2 Laser treatment in Lakeway performed?

When you come to see us for your UltraPulse appointment, we first apply a topical numbing cream to all of the areas we are going to treat with laser resurfacing. We provide eye protection for you. Then we start making passes over the treatment areas with the UltraPulse handpiece. With each pulse of the CO2 laser, you’ll sense a slight stinging sensation as the laser energy contacts the skin. Patients equate the feeling to that of a small rubber band being snapped lightly on the skin. Depending upon the treatment, we may apply a cold compress to the treatment areas after your session. These sessions only take from 45 minutes to an hour for most treatments.

What is recovery like after UltraPulse CO2 Laser treatment?

After CO2 fractional resurfacing, there is a little recovery. This is what you can expect, although this can vary with the patient. Lighter treatments are less involved: Day 1 — You will leave our offices and your skin will appear as if moderately sunburned and it will feel tight. Day 2 — Your skin will now appear bronzed and darker. Day 3-4 — Your skin will begin to peel, and areas may itch. Day 5 — Peeling should begin to end. Day 7-8 — Your redness should fully resolve.

Are there risks with UltraPulse CO2 skin resurfacing?

These are low-risk treatments. These are potential risks that are very rare: skin burns, scarring, changes in pigmentation on darker skin tones.
