Mommy Makeover Austin, TX Scottsdale, TX

A mommy makeover is an assortment of body contouring treatments that restore the female silhouette after giving birth. Motherhood is a special stage in a woman’s life that brings many love-filled moments. But, alas, this stage in life can significantly impact the body’s appearance and one’s self-confidence. New mothers may experience weight changes, loose breast tissue, stretched skin, and other aesthetic concerns resulting from pregnancy or nursing a newborn child. [1]

A mommy makeover provides mothers with a simplified process by combining body contouring procedures, such as breast lift, abdominoplasty, liposuction, or Brazilian Butt Lift, to restore desired contours.  Dr. Michelle Cabret of Austin Cosmetic Surgery is pleased to offer this unique treatment that makes a significant difference in patients’ lives. About a Mommy Makeover

Many mothers reminisce about their pre-baby appearance and think of it as their ideal look.

A Mommy Makeover restores one’s figure by combining multiple body contouring procedures.

During your consultation with Dr. Michelle Cabret, you will explore different options to achieve both aesthetic goals. The following procedures are commonly included in a Mommy Makeover:

Abdominoplasty

An abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, addresses both aesthetic and functional concerns. During pregnancy stretching on the abdominal wall causes separation of the abdominal walls, also referred to as Diastasis Recti. (1) Regardless of how much one maintains a healthy lifestyle and exercises, it is impossible to restore the integrity of your core after pregnancy. Patients see functional improvements after abdominoplasty such as improved core strength and decreased lower back pain. Additionally, it has been proved to provide additional support to the blatter, allowing improvements to overflow incontinence.

An incision is made along the lower abdomen to gain access to the abdominal wall. Then, Dr. Cabret repairs any muscle separation and tightens the abdominal muscles. The skin is pulled tightly, with any excess skin being removed, and is closed using fine suturing techniques to promote less visible scarring.

Breast Lift and Breast Augmentation

Patients frequently combine a breast lift with an augmentation to address decreased volume and skin laxity in the breasts. A breast lift corrects skin laxity and projection concerns. During a breast lift, excess skin and tissue are removed, allowing the breast to be repositioned higher on the chest. In most cases, the areola size is adjusted, and the nipples are repositioned. Any pre-existing asymmetries can be addressed during a breast lift. An augmentation adjusts the breast size by inserting silicone implants under the pectoralis muscle. Placing the implants under the muscle allows for a more natural look, and increases the longevity of your results. It also has been shown that breast implants placed under the muscle increase the early detection of breast cancer during self-examination, and is safer when getting a mammogram.

Together with Dr. Michelle, you will select the size and profile of the implants to achieve your dream breasts. Many surgeons will perform breast lifts and breast augmentations at separate times, but due to Dr. Cabret’s rigorous training and 20+ years of experience, she is proudly one of the few surgeons who is able to perform them simultaneously, thus decreasing your overall recovery time and saving you money.

Liposuction

Liposuction allows one to contour specific parts of the body including the arms, back, bra fat, flanks, and thighs. A small incision is made to allow the passage of a cannula, which extracts unwanted fat. (2)

Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL)

A BBL with fat transfer allows patients to add volume to the buttocks and contour other areas of the body by using a patient’s fat. Liposuction is performed on the desired areas, collecting the fat in a closed, sterile canister. The fat is cleaned and reinjected from the canister into the buttocks to add projection and increase overall volume.

  • Arrange for childcare and pet care (if applicable) while you recover.
  • Ensure you have a solid support system to assist you after your surgery

2 weeks before surgery

  • Stop smoking/vaping and alcohol consumption because they impact your ability to heal.
  • Discontinue taking certain drugs, including any blood thinners and supplements.
  • Begin diet with restricted foods to allow for better healing
  • Pick up any prescriptions at your local pharmacy.
  • Designate a quiet, tranquil resting area at home with essential items within easy reach.

Procedure

Upon arrival at our state-of-the-art facility, you will be greeted by our friendly staff and taken to pre-op, where a loved one can sit and wait with you until your procedure. At the start of your treatment, one of our board-certified anesthesiologists will administer general anesthesia to keep you comfortable. Then, following the treatment plan and pre-surgical markings, Dr. Cabret will commence your treatment. Once your procedure is complete you will be monitored for a period of time before going home. In some cases, patients may choose to be monitored overnight at our facility.

Recovery

Each patient’s recovery period will look different since a mommy makeover combines multiple treatments into one session. The majority of post-surgical symptoms will resolve within six weeks. Patients are kept in compression garments for a minimum of 6 weeks.

Days 1-4

Once home, patients should concentrate on resting and taking it easy for the first few days as mild bruising, swelling, soreness, and tightness are expected. You can control these symptoms by taking the prescribed pain relievers. After the first 48-72 hours you should feel better and able to switch to Tylenol.

First Two Weeks

Within the first few days after your procedure, we encourage patients to return to as much of their normal schedule as possible. You will be expected to be up and moving around throughout the day, but still avoid any strenuous activity. You can expect your stitches and drains to be removed during a post-operative visit in this time frame.

Weeks 3-6

Most patients are okay to return to work and resume light activity at this time.

Results

Depending on your aesthetic goals your Mommy Makeover will help to:

  • Restore youthful contours
  • Remove loose skin in the abdomen from pregnancy, and tighten abdominal muscles
  • Lift and restore volume to the breasts

  • Restored self-confidence

In order to maintain your results, one must make it a priority to get regular exercise and seek out healthier eating habits. By committing to yourself and living a healthy lifestyle you will be able to enjoy your new look for years to come.

FAQ

What Is A Mommy Makeover?

A mommy makeover is a series of body contouring procedures that are performed to reverse the changes that affect a woman’s sense of confidence in her body after pregnancy and breastfeeding. The procedures that are chosen target the areas that pregnancy affects the most, the breasts, abdomen, and buttocks. The common procedures involved in a mommy makeover include a breast lift, breast augmentation, abdominoplasty, and liposuction.

Why Is It Best To Have These Procedures At One Time Instead of Individually?

The combining of procedures into one surgery day is advantageous because that is only one time under anesthesia, versus multiple surgeries. One surgery day also means one short sabbatical from work and family obligations, which is easier for most women to manage than several recovery periods. Additionally, our surgeons are so proficient at simultaneous mastopexy with augmentation that they find it easier for them and clearly more rewarding for the woman and significant other.

Am I A Good Candidate For A Mommy Makeover?

Women who are in good overall health and have realistic expectations of what is possible with a mommy makeover are typically excellent candidates for treatment. Some of the common characteristics shared by mommy makeover patients include stable weight, deflated or sagging breasts, persistent fatty tissue or extreme laxity in the abdominal area, or excess fat and skin around the hips and thighs.

How Long Is A Mommy Makeover Procedure?

Every Mommy Makeover surgery is carefully planned to address a patient’s concerns. Each treatment plan is unique, which affects the timing of the procedure. A Mommy Makeover can take approximately 4 hours but may take more or less time depending on the procedures being done. Our patients are informed of the estimated surgery time during their consultation. Surgery details are also briefly reviewed at the surgery center before the procedure begins.

How Can I Prepare for Mommy Makeover Surgery?

Once you have decided to have a Mommy Makeover and have selected your surgeon, it is time to prepare for the procedure and recovery. Patients are advised to:

– Stop smoking, if applicable
– Avoid alcohol consumption
– Stop taking certain medications. A general list is provided in preoperative instructions.
– Arrange time off work.
– Arrange childcare and pet care, if applicable.
– Fill prescriptions.
– Prepare a quiet, comfortable space at home.
– Consider making meals that can be easily heated or gathering take-out menus.
– Compile an array of entertainment, such as music, podcasts, books, coloring books, and movies.

What Should I Expect During Recovery After Mommy Makeover Surgery?

Recovery from a Mommy Makeover is initially all about rest. Patients can expect:

– 24-72 hours of pain medication. After 72 hours, many patients can switch to an appropriate over-the-counter pain reliever. If you’re unsure what you can take for pain, contact our office.
– Bruising. This may last up to 3 weeks.
– Swelling. This gradually decreases over several weeks.
– Numbness, tingling, or tenderness in areas where liposuction is performed.
– If a breast procedure is performed, tenderness decreases over 2 to 3 weeks.
– Stitches may be removed approximately one week after surgery.
– Certain activity limitations. For example, patients cannot swim for 3 weeks after surgery. Smoking and alcohol consumption must also be avoided for at least 2 weeks.
– Exercise may need to be avoided for 6 weeks.
– Compression garments. This may include a surgical bra or other compression and may continue for 3 to 6 weeks.
– Scarring. After about 6 weeks, patients may begin using a scar cream or other scar treatment to help skin heal quickly.

What Is The Recovery Period For A Mommy Makeover?

Because a Mommy Makeover combines procedures, the recovery period is slightly more extended than an individual procedure. The typical full recovery time for a full makeover that includes breast augmentation and/or lifts, abdominoplasty, and liposuction is about six-twelve weeks with incisions being ‘mature’ at 12-18 months.

Dr. Michelle encourages early activity as most of our patients are walking 1-2 miles by day 10. Comfort is significantly improved over the first 7-10 days with most of our Moms off all pain meds within 5 and muscle relaxers within 10-14 days. She will closely monitor your activity and give you the individual direction you need.

Are There Any Risks Associated With Mommy Makeover Surgery?

Surgical procedures have inherent risks that include:

– Infection
– Adverse reactions to anesthesia
– Bleeding
– Unfavorable scarring
– Capsular Contracture of Breast Implants
– Asymmetry
– Blood clots
– Hematoma or other fluid accumulation
– Lingering numbness or tingling
– Changes in skin pigmentation
– Need for revision surgery

When Can I Return to Work After A Mommy Makeover?

Patients should expect to do very little moving around the first week after a Mommy Makeover. Some walking or movement is necessary to maintain optimal circulation and prevent blood clots. However, this is minimal. Depending on the nature of a woman’s job, it may be possible to return to work sometime during the second week of recovery. We do not advise rushing back to work. While physical comfort may be significantly improved, the body may still need more rest than normal to continue tissue recovery.

When Can I Resume Exercise After A Mommy Makeover?

Your timeline to return to your normal exercise routine depends on what that routine is and what procedures you’ve had performed. Since a Mommy Makeover may include a variety of different procedures, including liposuction of the stomach, buttocks, hips, or other areas, a tummy tuck, and breast procedures, every patient will receive specific instructions for the post-recovery exercise. Generally, patients must avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities that elevate the heart rate for at least 4 weeks. Patients may walk or, over time, ride a bicycle so long as they keep the intensity low.

Will I Have Any Scarring After A Mommy Makeover?

Yes. Patients can expect scars in the operative areas. An abdominoplasty scar typically sits below the panty-line and runs from hip to hip. Breast surgery scars are dependent on the procedure. Some breast scars are limited to the areola area, whereas others may run from the areola down to the breast crease. Our patients are told of their incision patterns during their consultation so they know what to expect.

Is A Mommy Makeover Safe?

The procedures involved in a Mommy Makeover are generally considered safe, even when performed together. Multiple surgeries do increase the amount of time a patient is under anesthesia. However, breast and body procedures are less physiologically impactful on the body than procedures such as liver or heart surgery. No manipulation of internal organs occurs, so a Mommy Makeover is much less complicated than many other medical procedures.

A board-certified plastic surgeon will conduct a thorough consultation, medical history, and examination to confirm each patient is in good health before planning a Mommy Makeover. It is necessary to be completely honest with your surgeon about your health and also your lifestyle habits, as this also influences the degree of risk posed by surgery.

If I Still Plan To Have Children, Should I Consider A Mommy Makeover Now?

If you are planning to have more children, your surgeon will encourage you to postpone at least the tummy tuck portion of the process; not due to safety concerns (abdominoplasty does not inhibit a healthy pregnancy) but due to the way the midsection will change again during gestation.

How Long After Having My Last Baby Should I Wait To Have A Mommy Makeover?

One of the recommendations that doctors make is to give the body time to “bounce back” as much as it will naturally. It is also advantageous to schedule a Mommy Makeover after returning to within 10% of your ideal body weight. Our doctors request that you be completely done breastfeeding and having not lactated for upwards of a month.
