What is rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a nose job, is one of the most common surgical cosmetic procedures in the world. During a rhinoplasty, the nose is reshaped, reduced, or augmented to improve appearance or functionality of the nose. Our rhinoplasty in Austin at Austin Cosmetic Surgery is unique because it is not only cosmetic but a reconstructive procedure.

Nose reconstruction

Patients with a birth defect, an injury, or a deviated septum can receive a rhinoplasty to resolve these issues. Your nose is one of your most noticeable features and a critical element of your general well-being. Therefore, any issues can make day-to-day life difficult. At Austin Cosmetic Surgery, we consider both appearance and function to deliver breathtaking results for all our patients.

What Can a Rhinoplasty do?

Whether cosmetic or functional, patients undergoing rhinoplasty typically have specific goals in mind. While some people simply want to improve appearance, others want to improve their breathing. Fixing a deviated septum or opening breathing passages can dramatically help nasal breathing. In addition to the patients day-to-day happiness and wellness. Our talented nose surgeon can accomplish one or more of the following during rhinoplasty:

  • Increase or decrease size
  • Modify the bridge
  • Open breathing passages
  • Remove a hump
  • Repair an injury

Am I a candidate for rhinoplasty?

Primarily, candidates for a nose job must have completed facial growth to have the nose operated on. This typically occurs around the ages of 16 to 18, with boys being on the older side. Additionally, it is important that patients are in good overall health and do not smoke. Patients who are in good health tend to heal quicker and better. Most importantly, patients should have realistic expectations about what a nose job can do for them. Having your nose reshaped does improve your appearance to an extent, but you should not expect it to completely change the way you look.

Preparing for rhinoplasty

After a consultation with us, we will schedule your rhinoplasty. You will be given specific instructions to prepare for surgery. Rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia. Depending on the technique chosen and the previously agreed upon goals, the procedure can take from about one to two hours to complete.

Recovery after your rhinoplasty surgery

Following a nose job, patients will likely experience minimal pain which they can alleviate with prescription pain medication. Bruising and swelling will subside in a few days following surgery. During your follow-up visit, around 10 days later, we will remove the nasal splint. Patients can expect a full recovery within two weeks; however, final results may not be evident for up to one year.

What is the rhinoplasty procedure?

Depending on your unique needs, incisions will be made either inside the nose or under the nose along the nostrils. Then, we remove skin from the bone and cartilage, allowing us to reshape them. If necessary, our cosmetic surgeon may reshape the nostrils. Finally, the skin is replaced over your nose and secured.

Caring for your newly reshaped nose

In order to increase comfort and decrease bleeding and swelling, patients should avoid strenuous activities, blowing the nose, making exaggerated facial expressions, and pulling clothing over the head. It is best to avoid any contact with the facial area during recovery.

We will discuss the full limitations and how to best care for your nose following your procedure, so you are fully informed. The rules for a fast recovery include:

  • Avoid blowing your nose
  • Avoid wearing glasses
  • Avoid strenuous activities
  • Avoid smoking
  • Avoid tight clothing

What is revision rhinoplasty?

Revision rhinoplasty, also known as a second rhinoplasty, is when complications from a previous rhinoplasty are corrected. Usually, the problems needing correction are minor, although nose deformities can occur if the surgery was not performed by a well-trained surgeon. This is why it is so important to have your first, or if necessary, your revision rhinoplasty, with a qualified surgeon with extensive experience, and who use the most advanced surgical techniques, as you will find at Austin Cosmetic Surgery.

What are the different types of rhinoplasty procedures?

There are two main types of rhinoplasty: open rhinoplasty and closed rhinoplasty. Open rhinoplasty involves making an incision on the columella (the strip of tissue between the nostrils), providing better access to the nasal structures. Closed rhinoplasty involves making incisions inside the nostrils, resulting in no visible external scarring.

Will rhinoplasty surgery leave visible scars?

In closed rhinoplasty, any incisions are made inside the nostrils, resulting in no visible external scarring. In open rhinoplasty, a small incision is made on the columella, but the scar typically fades over time and is usually inconspicuous.

When will I see the final results of rhinoplasty?

While some initial improvements may be visible once the swelling subsides, it can take several months for the nose to fully settle into its new shape and for the final results of rhinoplasty to become apparent.

How long do the results of rhinoplasty last?

The results of rhinoplasty are generally long-lasting, but factors such as aging and natural changes in the nasal structure may affect the appearance of the nose over time.
