Cheek Augmentation

Cheek Augmentation Austin TXIconic stunningly “beautiful” faces known to the world that have stood the test of time such as Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Angelina Jolie, and Charlize Theron have a single facial feature in common……beautiful, high peaking cheeks.

Over the past twenty years, Drs. Michelle and Albert Carlotti have found themselves treatment planning fewer lower lid blepharoplasties and many more cheek and tear trough implants of various sizes and shapes.

What Is Cheek Augmentation?

Cheek augmentation is a cosmetic procedure that uses cheek implants to create fuller, more prominent cheekbones. If you have weak cheekbones, a narrow face structure or have lost tone in your cheeks due to time and aging, cheek augmentation surgery may be the perfect choice for you. Cheek implants may also be part of a greater facial rejuvenation protocol when combined with rhinoplasty, chin augmentation, brow lifts and eyelid lifts.

Who Is a Candidate for Cheek Augmentation?

We all know that we lose volume over time but the malar and submalar areas (the cheekbone and below the cheekbone) seem to age both males and females sometimes prematurely and sometimes exaggeratedly. Men and women with genetically flatter midfaces tend to age more profoundly and seemingly earlier regardless of race. Consequently, the augmentation of the cheekbone has become commonplace in our practice.

The Drs. Carlotti use cheek or tear trough implants on many of our exclusively performed 4-Dimensional Facelifts leading to total facial rejuvenation that has given the Drs. Carlotti international notoriety. Dr. Michelle Carlotti and Dr. Albert Carlotti spend time personally discussing the aspects of facial aging that bother patients that have come in for consultation and it is the tear trough with darkness that people consistently point to; only second to lax necks with profound jowling. The soft tissue submalar (below the cheekbone) deficiencies resulting in dark circles-tear troughing and nasojugal troughing (where the cheek volume appears to split) in men over 55 is nearly a universal concern. The permanent benefits of an Implantech Flowers Tear Trough Implant are discussed. They spend time educating thin 40-year-old females with genetically soft mid-face prominences of the benefits of varying sizes that can erase that can fill back out early hollowing and give permanent mid face support allowing the patient to age more slowly over time going forward.

What Is Discussed During A Consultation for Cheek Augmentation?

After a review of your medical history and an examination of your current health status, our surgical team will analyze your bone structure to determine the best cheek implants for you. It is important to disclose any prior drug use, such as tobacco products, antidepressants or other prescribed medications.

Are Cheek Implants Customizable?

There are so many shapes and sizes of implants that the Drs. Carlotti may use them to change/alter/enhance the midface of certain patients requesting a given look or they may simply use some implants to restore volume lost over time for others.

Dr. Michelle and Albert Carlotti’s implants of choice are made of a soft pliable smooth silicone that is easy to shape around nerves or asymmetric nuances of a given face. It is our firm philosophy that any implant intended to augment or supplement the facial skeleton should be adhered and fixated in place with two small titanium retention screws or more. The Drs. Carlotti experience is so vast and over decades and have seen that most folks forget the implants are even there.

Cheek Augmentation Procedure

The Drs. Carlotti, with their expert maxillofacial backgrounds and unparalleled experience assessing and manipulating facial bones if need be, see the placement of facial implants as a routine part of facial rejuvenation surgery. They will explain and show you, if you would like, how an intraoral vestibular incision is made, the subperiosteal pocket developed while identifying and taking all measures to protect vital structures, the implant(s) placed and secured in place with titanium screws, and the incision closed in a multi-layered fashion paying careful attention to re-approximate facial muscles. In most cases, the procedure takes 30-45 minutes and has lifelong lasting results.

You’ll be given general anesthesia by our surgical team before the procedure begins. Incisions will be made inside the upper lip to allow access to the cheekbones. This intraoral incision not only minimizes visible scarring, but it also gives us a clear view of your bone structure for optimal placement and symmetry. We then place the silicone cheek implants and secure them to the bone with bone tacks. Finally, we close the incisions with absorbable sutures that will disappear naturally a few weeks after the procedure.

Cheek Augmentation Recovery

After your cheek augmentation procedure, you will likely experience some mild soreness, swelling and discomfort. This will all go away after a few days, and you’ll be able to return to work and your normal routine in about a week.

Are Complications Common After Cheek Augmentation?

Most of the complications cited in the literature are the result of implant movement and therefore can be avoided by a properly trained surgeon. All incisions are made intraorally (inside the mouth) essentially making this a wonderful, discreet to invisible scar procedure.

Complications cited in the literature are: acute or late infection requiring removal or replacement of the prosthesis, asymmetry, extrusion, dehiscence of incision or implant thru mucosa or skin, boney callous formation, hardening or capsular contracture, bleeding or hematoma, associated anesthetic risks, numbness of cheek and/or lip, visual field impairment, implant displacement or asymmetry, or need for secondary procedures.
