What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a proven form of collagen-induction. The technique has existed for many years in the form of dermal rolling. In the clinical setting, microneedling is performed using a small, automated handpiece that creates uniform microchannels that penetrate the various layers of the epidermis. The creation of micro-injuries stimulates collagen production in the dermis.

How does microneedling work?

Microneedling invokes collagen production through its creation of micro-injuries in the deeper layers of the skin. Collagen is made in the dermis, which is why it is important to penetrate through all four layers of the epidermis to achieve appreciable improvements in the skin. After each microneedling treatment, the cells that produce collagen and elastin enter an active phase for up to 4 to 6 months. More collagen and elastin mean more radiance, smoothness, and firmness.

What can be applied during microneedling treatment?

Microneedling can be performed in one of two ways, with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or with a nourishing serum. When microneedling uses PRP, treatment begins with a quick blood draw, just as you would have during a routine physical. The blood collected is processed in a high-speed centrifuge. This separates nutrient-dense plasma from red blood cells. While blood is processing, or before traditional microneedling, patients sit comfortably with a topical anesthetic on their skin.

What to expect during your microneedling procedure?

The microneedling process involves passing the applicator over the skin in light, gentle motions. The provider may focus on one area at a time, making two passes over the skin on the cheeks, then the nose, the forehead, and so on. A soothing serum or PRP may be applied either before or immediately after the creation of hundreds of microchannels. Both of our offices use serums such as NeoCutis BioSerum Firm with human growth factors, as well as PRP.

Microneedling does not use light or chemicals and therefore does not instigate significant inflammation. Without heat and chemical reactions, microneedling achieves significant results in all skin types.

Will I need multiple treatments to achieve results?

Microneedling is a form of collagen-induction. We need to provoke collagen from fibroblasts because these cells enter dormancy sometime around age 30. Each microneedling treatment draws more collagen and elastin into the foundational layers of the skin, correcting scarring, stretch marks, and signs of aging. A series of treatments may be needed to achieve the desired improvements. After the skin has been reset through the customized treatment plan, touch-ups may be performed a few times a year to continue activating the fibroblast cells’ production of important skin proteins.

How to care for skin after microneedling?

During the short inflammatory response period after microneedling, patients are instructed to use gentle, non-abrasive, and non-exfoliating products. If possible, makeup should not be applied until the following day. Sunscreen is also a vital aspect of skincare after microneedling to prevent further sun damage. We may discuss the use of products that are proven to address cosmetic concerns like acne, sun damage, or lines and wrinkles.

Are there any risks to microneedling?

Microneedling is conducted by trained professionals who utilize sterile clinical protocols during treatment. This manages risks such as inflammation, bleeding, and infection. When performed at our advanced, high-tech medical practice, the risks of microneedling are very low.

Is there any recovery time after microneedling?

Patients can resume normal activities immediately after microneedling treatment. However, we must note that the skin may look noticeably red for a few hours. If you’ve never had microneedling before, we suggest scheduling your appointment at a time when you do not have to return to the office or attend to social obligations.
